Definition: Prenatal tests is a general term for both screening tests and diagnostic tests done during pregnancy to detect Down syndrome and other genetic disorders.

Diagnostic testing includes amniocentesis and chorionic villi sampling (CVS). Screening tests include nuchal translucency testing, first trimester serum screening, triple marker screening and ultrasound.

Examples:
Nuchal translucency screening, done in the first trimester of pregnancy, is a prenatal test designed to detect Down syndrome in a pregnancy.
